LAHORE: The Chief Justice of Lahore has formed a 3 member to hear the appeal filed by the Sharifs’ lawyer against the punishment awarded to them in the Avenfield reference.
The 3 member bench comprises of Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza, Justice Sajid Mehmood Sethi and Justice Mujahid Mustaqeem.
On July 6, an accountability court had sentenced former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to a total of 11 years in prison and imposed a £8 million fine (Rs1.3 billion) on him in the Avenfield corruption reference. His daughter Maryam was sentenced to eight years in prison with a £2 million fine (Rs335 million), while her husband Capt (retd) Safdar was given a one-year sentence without any fine.
The convictions were contested by Lahore High Court (LHC) senior lawyer A.K Dogar who argued that the convictions were given under the pretext of the National Accountability Ordinance 1999 but the ordinance does not hold legitimacy after the 18th amendment.
A.K Dogar has argued that the former Premier along with his daughter have been sentenced to prison under a outdated law.
The bench will commence the hearing of the petition of August 8.
